Traineeship pathway results in positive outcomes for all

Mt Views Home Booleroo, located at the base of the Flinders Ranges in the mid-north town of Booleroo Centre, strives to provide a family focus with a caring heart. Winner of the ACSA Aged Care Awards 2019 – SA Regional, Rural and Remote Provider of the Year – Mt View Homes Inc. provides excellent quality care and lifestyle services in a safe and comfortable environment, enabling residents to enjoy the best quality of life.

Mt Views Home Booleroo, CEO, Jenny Deer is a long-term supporter of traineeships, however, their recent Enrolled Nurse traineeship was a first. The traineeship was delivered through TAFE SA and MEGT Adelaide, a not-for-profit organisation that has been supporting local employers, apprentices, trainees, job seekers and students for over 35 years.

Susan Murray began working for Mt Views Homes, in response to an urgent call for staff and was recommended to CEO Jenny Deer, by a friend. Susan had almost completed her Certificate III in Aged Care when she commenced as an aged care worker.

After completing her qualification, Susan was keen to continue her career pathway by studying to be an Enrolled Nurse. “There was no hesitation on behalf of Mt Views Home, as Susan was proving to be of great value as a staff member, so a traineeship was organised”, said CEO Jenny Deer.

“Along with this offer, came permanent status, five days paid training, and reimbursement of the study costs provided through the traineeship. This arrangement bonded Susan to Mt Views Homes for up to two-year work following her certificate”.

Susan approached study with dedication and completed it within 18 months. The experience has been positive for all parties, and Ms. Murray is setting her sights on continuing her career by studying Registered Nursing in the future.

“Jenny has been very supportive of me as an employee and enrolled nurse trainee, she has done everything she can to give me shifts that work around my studies and allowed me to take time off when I needed a break.  I’ve applied for the Bachelor of Nursing for 2021 so that I can keep learning and evolving as a health care worker because I get bored very quickly and am the kind of person who wants to know as much as possible about whatever it is that I’m doing.  I am very proud of the care we give our residents at Mt View Homes and I feel we give them a ‘home away from home’.  We know each of the residents very well, which means we can provide care that they may not receive as quickly in a large facility, where they are not as well known to the staff”, said Susan.
